Repair terms

These terms apply when you leave a computer, laptop, tablet or other device with Principal Computers for repair, and to repair work we do at your premises. Please read them before you bring a device in. Our service charges are on the Repairs page.

Important notices

The repair of your goods may result in the loss of any user-generated data. Please ensure that you have made a copy of any data saved on your goods.

If you can’t back up your files yourself, tell us when you book in and we can do it for you. Backing up takes time, so it is charged at our usual rates.

Booking in

  • Walk in any time we’re open*. We give you a job number and text you as the job moves along.
  • Tell us about the problem, and anything else we should know, such as files you need kept.
  • Leave the charger, cables and anything else the fault involves. Take memory cards, discs and USB drives with you unless we need them.
  • We will need your device password to test it. You can change it once you have the device back.
  • We record the condition of your device when you book it in, including any existing damage.

Quotes and approval

  • Labour is charged at the rates on our Repairs page, and parts are charged on top.
  • When you book in, we agree on how much we can spend without calling you. It can be nothing. We call you for your approval before going over that amount.
  • If we quote and you decline the quote, you only pay for work you have already agreed to.
  • Some parts have to be ordered in. We may ask for a deposit before we order a part. A part ordered specially for you may not be refundable if you cancel after it has arrived.
  • Priority service costs an extra $50 and moves your job to the front of the queue.

During the repair

  • Sometimes a second fault only shows once the first one is fixed. If it would cost more than you agreed, we call you first.
  • Some devices aren’t worth repairing. If we think a repair would cost more than the device is worth, we tell you before going ahead.
  • If a repair needs a refurbished part, we text you for your approval before we fit it.
  • We install only software you hold a licence for, or software we supply.
  • Repairs covered by a manufacturer’s warranty follow the manufacturer’s process and timeframes.

Collection and payment

  • We text you when your device is ready. Payment is due when you collect it, unless you have a business account with us.
  • Please collect your device within 30 days of us telling you it’s ready.
  • If a device isn’t collected, we follow Tasmania’s Disposal of Uncollected Goods Act 2020. We text you a written notice that it’s ready for collection, which says what is owed. If it still isn’t collected or paid for 6 months later, we text you a notice of intention to sell. If it is still uncollected a month after that, the device may be sold by public auction. Reasonable storage costs from the date of our first notice, and the costs of the sale, may be taken from what it sells for. Anything left over belongs to you.

Your rights

Our services come with guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law: we do the work with due care and skill, and within a reasonable time. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. If something we repaired isn’t right, contact us. See our returns and warranty page.

Insurance quotes

An insurance quote or report costs $50 for RACT and $80 for other insurers, waived if your insurer goes ahead with the repair or replacement through us.
